Green Renovation with Martin Home Improvements
General Definitions

Most often, when we refer to green renovation, we are using a general definition blended from a variety of authoritative sources. For our purposes, green choices rely on a combination of the following considerations, depending on each project's unique specifications:
  1. Low Construction Impact: This refers primarily to careful, conscious site selection that minimizes environmental impact. As an existing home or cottage owner this may not be a consideration for you. There are, however, many people in the Muskoka area who have decided to start green from the beginning. The Canada Green Building Council has excellent resources and experts available for those who are looking to build green from the ground up.
  2. Resource Efficiency through the Life of the Building: This refers to the efficient use of resources for heating, cooling, water and electricity. Again, as an existing homeowner you may not able to completely redesign your utility systems, but would like to make conscious, greener choices in your appliance, faucet, and heating/cooling selections when you renovate. We can assist you to make the choices that fit best with your lifestyle.
  3. Long Lasting: Essentially, the longer a building lasts and doesn't need to be replaced, the greener it is. Materials selection for your renovation project is the key to durability, and we can help you select from many local and available materials that are both beautiful and long-lasting.
  4. Local: As a general rule, the closest materials to your renovation are the greenest. Wherever possible, we try to use locally sourced materials, and are very fortunate in Muskoka to have many available to choose from.

  5. Nontoxic: Choosing non toxic materials is a healthy choice for you and your family, and is relatively easy as many products are available locally and in the larger home improvement stores. We can help you choose countertops, cabinet materials, flooring, and paint and stain finishes that are right for your project
  6. Beautiful: Any green product should enhance the beauty of your home or cottage. Green renovation can reflect your lifestyle and personality in unique and ultimately beautiful ways, and we can show you a very wide range of materials that will enhance the aesthetic enjoyment you find in your home or cottage.

Martin Home Improvements is a member of the Canada Green Building Council (Greater Toronto Chapter), and is committed to ongoing training in green renovation, building materials and techniques. We never pressure clients into going greener than their lifestyle or budget allows; we do, however, provide a range of material and product options that allow you to make the best, most informed choices for your own life and home.
